Indonesia operates under a Coal Cooperation Agreement with the Government of Indonesia which gives it the right to mine coal within its agreement area in the Tanjung district of South Kalimantan Province until the year 2022 with rights to extend by mutual agreement. There are four deposits within the Agreement Area which contain total coal resources of approximately 2.0 billion tones of open cut coal characterized by extremely thick seams of up to 50 meters with relatively low overburden.

PT. Berau Coal
PT Berau Coal, a Indonesian registered company owned by PT United Tractors 60% (a subsidiary of major Indonesian conglomerate), PT Armadian Tritunggal 30% (a private Indonesian company), and Nissho Iwai Corporation 10% (a well known Japanese Trading Company). Under a Coal Cooperation agreement entered into on 26 April 1983 with PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA), the state owned company holding exclusive authority to mine coal in Indonesia, Berau Coal was appointed as the sole contractor at a specific mining area in East Kalimantan. Currently the concession area covers some 1200 sq. kilometers.
